26 WORDS IN BASIC STROKES – WORD 8 – HAPPY
Hello and welcome back to 26 Words in Basic Strokes. I’m Riëtte and I’m breaking down one word a day for 26 days into the basic calligraphy strokes. We’re keeping it simple, no flourishes, no bouncing. If you need an overview of the basic strokes I break them down in the introduction video of this series. Today’s word is “happy”.
You start with an upstroke.

Move on to an ascending stroke.

A compound curve – the exit stroke does not quite reach the x-height.

An oval.

An underturn stroke.

A descending stroke.

A reverse oval.

An upstroke.

A descending stroke.

Another reverse oval.

A compound curve that starts with a slight curve.

A descending stroke.

And an upstroke.

Now let’s put them all together.
An upstroke.

An ascending stroke.

A compound curve.

An oval.

A underturn stroke.

A descending stroke.

A reverse oval.

An upstroke.

A descending stroke.

Reverse oval.

Compound curve.

Descending stroke.

Upstroke.

And that’s the word “happy”.
