26 Words in Basic Strokes – Word 24 – xhosa

Hello and welcome back to 26 Words in Basic Strokes. I took a bit of a break after the riots we had in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa a little while back, my husband’s office and warehouse was looted and burnt down and it’s been quite an emotional roller coaster for us all. I’m slowly getting back to doing the things I love, so here I am with word number 24 – xhosa. Have fun laughing at me trying to pronounce it correctly.

Grab your pen/pencil and paper and practice with me. If you need an overview of the basic strokes and the tools I’m using, head to the introduction video of the series.

26 Words in Basic Strokes – word 24 – xhosa

Hello and welcome back to 26 Words in Basic Strokes. I’m Riëtte and I’m breaking down one word a day for 26 days into the basic calligraphy strokes. We’re keeping it simple, no flourishes or bouncing. If you need an overview of the basic strokes I break them down in the introduction video of this series. Today we are doing word number 24 – xhosa.

Your first stroke is a modified compound curve. What this means is we’re just going to modify it slightly. Thin upstroke, thick down stroke in the opposite direction and thin upstroke in the same direction as your first upstroke.

Next you have another upstroke, but this upstroke is just going to go straight up in the same direction or parallel to the first and second upstroke of your first stroke – no curve.

Next you have an ascending stroke.

A compound curve – the final stroke of this compound curve doesn’t quite reach the x-height.

An oval.

A connector dot.

An s-stroke.

An upstroke that doesn’t quite reach the x-height.

An oval.

An underturn stroke.

Now let’s connect them.

A modified compound curve.

An ascending stroke.

A compound curve.

An oval.

A connector dot.

An s-stroke.

An upstroke.

An oval.

And an underturn stroke.

An upstroke with no curve.

And that’s the word “xhosa”.

I would love to see your practice. Tag me on Instagram using #26wordsinbasicstrokes. Thank you so much for watching. I’ll see you tomorrow with word number 25.
