26 Words in basic strokes – Word 16 – promise

Hello and welcome back to 26 Words in Basic Strokes. I’m Riëtte and I’m breaking down one word a day for 26 days into the basic calligraphy strokes. We’re keeping it simple, no flourishes and no bouncing. If you need an overview of the basic strokes I break them down in the introduction video of this series. Today is word 16, promise. Let’s break it down.

You’ll start with an upstroke.

Next it’s a descending stroke.

Next up is a reverse oval.

An upstroke.

A connector dot.

Then you have an underturn stroke that starts where your connector dot ended and also stops before it reaches the x-height.

An oval.

A connector dot and overturn stroke combination.

An overturn stroke.

A compound curve. The exit stroke doesn’t quite reach the x-height.

An underturn stroke.

An s-stroke.

An upstroke. This one also doesn’t reach the x-height.

And an e-stroke.

Now let’s put them together.

Descending stroke.

Reverse oval.

Connector dot.

Underturn stroke.

Connector dot overturn stroke combination.

Overturn stroke.

Compound curve.

Underturn stroke.

And e-stroke.

And remember to dot your “i”.

That’s the word promise.
