26 Words in Basic Strokes – word 14 – nature

It’s time for 26 Words in Basic Strokes, today we are breaking down word number 14 – amazing.

26 Words in Basic Strokes is a video series I created to help us practice our connections in modern calligraphy. For 26 days I break down one word a day into its basic calligraphy strokes. It’s a way to practice not just all the strokes, but also ways that strokes get modified.

You can follow along with any brush pen or even a pencil if you are a beginner – I practice with pencil all the time. Most importantly, have fun. Let’s break down today’s word. Click on the video to watch or scroll down if you prefer reading and still images.

26 WORDS IN BASIC STROKES – WORD 14 – NATURE

Hello and welcome back to 26 Words in Basic Strokes.

I’m Riëtte and I’m breaking down one word a day for 26 days into the basic modern calligraphy strokes. We’re keeping it simple, no flourishes and no bouncing. If you need an overview of the basic strokes I break them down in the introducion video of this series. Let’s move on to today’s word. Today’s word is “nature”.

We’ll start with an overturn stroke.

Next we have a compound curve – the exit stroke doesn’t quite reach the x-height.

Next we have an oval.

Move on to an underturn stroke.

Next we have a t-stroke.

Another underturn stroke.

And another underturn stroke.

A connector dot.

An underturn stroke. This one starts where the connector dot ended, and it doesn’t reach the x-height.

An e-stroke.

Now let’s put them all together.

Overturn stroke.

Compound curve.

Oval.

Underturn stroke.

T-stroke.

Underturn stroke.

Underturn stroke.

Connector dot.

Underturn stroke.

E-stroke.

Don’t forget to cross the “t”.

And that’s the word “nature”.
