26 WORDS IN BASIC STROKES – WORD 11 – KINDNESS
Hello and welcome back to 26 Words in Basic Strokes. I’m Riëtte and I’m breaking down one word a day for 26 days into the basic calligraphy strokes. We’re keeping it simple, no flourishes, no bouncing. If you need an overview of the basic strokes I break them down in the Introduction video of this series. Today’s word is kindness and it has one or two new strokes.
First we start with an upstroke.

Our next stroke is an ascending stroke.

Our next stroke is a new stroke… It starts at the baseline, thin up and before we reach the x-height we’re going to loop back down, thick, and connect it in the middle of the baseline and the x-height.

Next we have another new stroke – we are going to start where we stopped, and we are going to pull down toward the baseline and then loop back up toward the x-height, almost in a v-shape with a thin upstroke.

Our next stroke is a reverse or upside down compound curve.

Next we have a compound curve, the exit stroke doesn’t quite reach the x-height.

Next we have an oval.

Our next stroke is a l-stroke or t-stroke combined with an overturn stroke.

Next we have a compound curve. Again, the exit stroke does not quite reach the x-height.

Next we have an e-stroke.

S-stroke.

Upstroke.

S-stroke.

Now let’s connect them all.
Upstroke.

Ascending stroke.

Ascending loop for the “k”.

Descending v-stroke for the “k”.

Reverse of upside down compound curve.

Compound curve.

Oval.

L or T-stroke combination with an overturn stroke.

Compound curve.

E-stroke.

S-stroke.

Upstroke.

Remember to dot the “i”.

And that’s the word “kindness”.
